Blackheath Station at 6am

GRD II, f2.4, 1/20, ISO 80, RAW 1:1

When you wake up early you can find a different world out there, it is quiet, calm, people are nicer, more relaxed. There is no rush or the noise you have for the rest of the day. The streets look different, the light is great, you want to walk around, take it all in. Especially when the days get shorter and the temperatures lower the light and mood get better. I like travelling at this time of the day but am overall too lazy to get out that early on weekends but will need to do it and make a series of pictures in London.

At the same time the night can be fascinating, too, and present you with a different mood and atmosphere. Have a look at this set of pictures.

  1. Very nice! The atmosphere is really unique. I agree with you that it´s worth the trouble to get up early, but I´m finding I am too lazy, too. And when I get home at the time the sun is coming up, I´m normally not able to take good pictures anymore...

  2. Thanks for the comment.
I think we have the same problems with taking pictures early. Either too lazy or not in a state to take decent pictures ;).

  4. Thanks Wouter! You are right, the best thing about fall is that you have the great light in the morning for taking pictures and don't have to get up really early, plus the lower temperatures create fantastic colors in the sky.

Hehe, it is a great set and ispired me, so much as that if I would not have to work tomorrow I'd go for a walk taking pictures now ;).

  6. Hi Cristi
I agree dawn is a special time of day. The G9 has a time lapse feature which I used to take a series of shots from 6 to 9am in central London looking down the Thames. It captures the City coming to life (not that London ever goes to sleep). Looking at it one of the big surprises was seeing the flocks of birds flying north over London.
Your photo captures the "anticipation" of the coming day: the rising sun, the commuters, the increased frequency of trains (well theoretically - assuming there aren't the wrong leaves on the track), the first cup of coffee.
But you are not the only early morning visitor -I was interested seeing the graffiti below the platform.

  8. Yesbuts, now you got me thinking, the Ricohs are famous for their great time lapse feature but I have never really used it. Need to give it a go.
The way you described my picture is exactly the way I felt when taking it :).
The graffitti below the track is the result of the night visitors. I just wish they would stop just spraying their names and start producing some art. Would be great to have something nice below the platform to look at while waiting for the train.

  9. Love the colours, lights, composition and the mood they all generate! Pity that no railways in my place. But the picture really encourages me to discover the magic of the early morning. Thanks!
