Going Up

GRD II, f3.5, 1/540, ISO 100, JPG text

I think the Text mode in Ricoh cameras is pretty unique and very cool but not utilized enough. Maybe it is because people don't quite know what to do with it. It is not an easy mode to use for general photography so I will try to post some pictures taken with it and see what works and what doesn't. Then maybe have a whole Text mode week soon.

  1. I used the text mode by accident, and it's the most brilliant thing ever! I used to create pictures like this in Photoshop using 'stamp' (I think), and now Ricoh cameras just do the job in-camera! I used it on my GRD, and now on my CX1.

    Keep up the good photos!

  2. Thanks for your comment!

The text mode is really good but I think it needs a bit more promoting since most people won't use it. Maybe Ricoh should change the name to something different which does not imply that it is for text only.

  3. I have seen the price quoted for the GRDlll at +£500.

No way - it doesn't matter what features it has or the quality of the images it will produce - does any P&S warrant that price tag.

Earlier this year I bought a Nikon D40 with a kit lens for £240. No P&S is worth more than twice an entry level DSLR. The images, especially at high ISO, of the D40 is an order of magnitude better than I get from my Canon G9.

The only advantage a P&S has over a DSLR is the convenience of being able to have a camera with you at all times. What price are you prepared to pay for that convenience? - bearing in mind most photographs will not be reproduced as large prints.

  5. Yesbuts, the price is indeed very high and higher than I expected even with the weak pound at the moment.
As to wether a cheap dSLR is the way to go is difficult to say. For me even a dSLR for free would not do the job and stay at home.
Convenience and the ability to be discreete when shooting is worth a lot for me.

Thanks for your comment! Glad you like the picture and the blog.
If you can find one, you should get a GRD I, it's a fantastic camera and even with the GRD III soon to be released it's not outdated.
