Metal and Glass

GRD, f5, 1/500, ISO 400, JPG b&w, 21mm

This is the first picture with my new GRD I. Finally installed the latest firmware on it and set it up the way I want. Now I can retire my old GRD I after over 2 years of great service. I will miss it and although the new GRD I feels nice and does not have the buttons all worn out, it is not the same (so far).

  1. Any idea how many shots you took with the old GRD1?

"Old" seems disrespectful, perhaps "vintage"would be more appropriate.

  2. I have the same question.
For your new GRD, i think it's like a new car : it smells different !

    keep on shooting !

  3. And I thought the "old" GRD1 was still working, no? I mean, you could go on using it... or maybe tape the two together and take 3D photos! ;)

  4. I can't check exactly since I sent the camera in a few times and the counter has been reset. But judging fom the filenames I took at least 35,000 if not more pictures with my "vintage" GRD I. It still works flawless so I only retire it since the warranty expired and my new GRD I still has 2 years of warranty.
Although dlc's idea with taping both together sounds intriguing ;).
And I guess I will still take it along with me on holidays so it can continue to travel the world with me :). But for day to day shoting the new one will step in.

  5. I rotate both of my GRDs depending on the shooting situation. I carry the first one around (with just a detachable handstrap) everyday..it's my stealth machine. When I need to look more like a tourist, I use the newer one that has a small neck strap. It was hard to adjust to the newer one...I know what you mean. :)

  6. I don't mind which one you pick ;-) , as long as you keep making great photographs. :D

  7. You could have bought the GRD II. Why did you choose the GRD I over the II?

  8. Thanks Wouter, one thing that is sure is me taking pictures with my GRDs :).

James, rotating them depending on the shooting situation is what I do with my GRD I and GRD II but found that overall the GRD I gives me the images I want.

Marco, I do have the GRD II since my trip to Japan at the beginning of the year but I prefer the GRD I over it. The GRD I has more character, better JPGs and has a faster AF for street shots. I like the GRD I so much that I did not want to risk being without one so I bought the spare one recently.
The GRD II is technically superior to it in every respect (aside from focus speed in good light) but it lacks the character of the GRD I.
