Peter at the Rider Court

GRD, f5.6, 1/500, ISO 200, JPG b&w, 40mm

The sun came out again today for a big part of the day. It was about time after all the bad weather, just hope it will stay like this. Although the weather was nice I did not have much tme for taking pictures so took only a single picture.
Saw this guy while sitting outside for lunch. Walked past and took the picture after I finished. Really liked his looks and that he was leaning against the street sign. Cropped it to 16:9 and changed the contrast slightly.

  1. I would like to see this pic in colour - just to see his clothes.

  2. Unfortunatelly this is a b&w JPG only without a RAW file. His clothes were mostly black and blue with some yellow though so not that colorfull as it might appear.

  3. Just wondering why do you shoot B&W JPG, not colour (then change using Grayscale)?

  4. There are three reasons why I shoot b&w and not color.
If I decide to shoot in b&w I like to have the preview on the LCD in b&w so I can compose and choose the right settings for b&w.
I also prefer whenever possible to get the picture I want sraight out of camera so all I need to do is maybe crop it if at all.
And the GRD I b&w mode is great and more than simply a conversion to grayscale. I can get the same look using the Channel Mixer or new Black and White modes from a GRD I color JPG or RAW but prefer not to do too much post processing.

  5. Thanks for the reply.
I also think shooting in B&W, makes you think B&W (rather than rely on colour to make an average shot look better).
I wish I had the courage to set my G9 to B&W

  6. If your G9 can record both a b&w JPG and a RAW image than you can easily try setting it to b&w only, you can always get the color back when processing the RAW.

The Ricohs also have a very nice color bracketing mode where it records three images (b&w, sepia and color). Unfortunatelly it does not remember this when turned off so I don't use it much.

  7. Thanks for the tip.
It never occurred to me to shoot B&W and RAW.
Colour bracketing sounds a neat feature - pity about it not remembering the setting. The G9 has two saving custom settings which can be used to set the camera to your preferred settings,I am going to set one to B&W / RAW.

Rain again today - I don't think we have had a dry Bank Holiday this year. :(

  8. This sounds good that you can use the custom settings for this. I wonder how the G9 renders b&w JPGs. Most cameras just seem to convert the color image to grayscale but the GRD I has a different processing in place.
